The Write Way Takeaways
Thank you for joining me at the PCOA24 pre-conference workshop, The Write Way! I hope you learned something that will help your writing for years to come.
Compelling content:

It’s not about you
Keep your writing compelling by writing about your reader and their business. Write about how you can help them solve a problem or reach a goal.
Keep it concise:

Shorter sentences
Aim for an average sentence length of 25 words. Choose shorter versions of phrases and words. Don’t use three words when one word means the same thing.
Stick to the steps:

Start with an outline
Always start your writing with an outline. It can be simple or complex, but make sure you can summarise what you want to say. It will help you with your first draft.
Extra Resources
Extra resources for you to take your writing journey to the next level.
style guide
A writing style guide or manual is a set of standards for writing and formatting content. Adhere to your own company’s standards, voice and brand guidelines. If your company doesn’t have one, the Australian Government Style Manual is a useful starting point. It also has useful information on grammar, punctuation, accessible and inclusive content, and ways to structure your written work (great for starting an outline).
Proofreading
Even the best writers will struggle to proofread their own work. Use proofreading tools to check for grammar, spelling and punctuation errors before sending/publishing your written work.
Grammarly is a free online proofreading tool with additional paid options.
Microsoft Editor is typically included with standard Microsoft applications, like Word and Outlook. It’s not as accurate as Grammarly in catching grammar errors – it tends to miss correctly spelled words used in the wrong context – but has gotten better recently.
Books
‘The Elements of Style,’ by Strunk and White is considered one of the most comprehensive, concise and essential books on writing. It is A5 and less than 100 pages.
‘The Elements of Style, Fourth Edition,’ by William Strunk Jr and EB White →
‘Eats, Shoots And Leaves,’ by Lynn Truss is funny and informative. Truss highlights common punctuation errors in English with humour. Along the way, she explains why proper punctuation is so important and how to get it right (at least most of the time).
